Food, culture, and community are coming together in a big way in Miami. The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has announced the semi-finalists for The People’s Choice Barbecue Cookoff, a public event celebrating Overtown’s rich barbecue history while creating a major opportunity for a local entrepreneur.
The cookoff will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 12 PM to 5 PM at the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall in Overtown. The event is free and open to the public, inviting residents and food lovers to come out, taste amazing barbecue, and support local talent.
Three semi-finalists will compete for the chance to lease the fully renovated Historic People’s Barbecue Building, a landmark that has served the Overtown community for more than 50 years. The competitors include:
•Extra Butter Miami, competing as People’s Outlaw BBQ
•Rosie’s, competing as Black Pit BBQ
•McKays Catering, competing as Queen of the Kitchen
The winner of the cookoff will move forward in the final review process for the opportunity to bring new life to the historic barbecue space.
For decades, People’s Barbecue was more than just a restaurant — it was a gathering place where culture, food, and community came together. This cookoff aims to continue that legacy by placing the space back into the hands of a local entrepreneur who understands its significance.
Community members are encouraged to attend, enjoy the food, and be part of the next chapter in Overtown’s culinary story.
